Monaco, from three windows
In Monaco, where you watch the race from decides the race you see. So I never watched it twice from the same place. Three days, three windows, and I came home with three different races.
Where I stayedA villa. On the loudest weekend of the year, having a house to come back to changes everything: an unhurried coffee, a closed door, the quiet between a race and a party.
Where I watched fromOne day from the deck of a yacht in the harbour, with the cars passing between the boats and the sound bouncing off the water. Another from the Hôtel de Paris, facing Place du Casino, where the whole city stops as they climb past. And another from Nikki Beach, on the Fairmont rooftop, above the hairpin, the slowest corner on the calendar, where the car almost stops and you can watch the driver work.
The nightsThe best after parties of the weekend, with exclusive access. In Monaco, the parties that matter have no queue at the door. They have a list.
What I didI did not go alone. I brought a group, with the whole operation run by WAYFARER, from the villa to the nights. And I brought Rodrigo Bidin, who spent the days photographing faces, not cars. That became FACES OF MONACO, a series of anonymous portraits about the equalising gaze: when the cars go by, everyone looks at the same place.
What I bring to youThe three windows, tested one by one, and the right doors at night. Knowing where you see and where you only hear, which street closes first and how to cross the city on a race day.
On the last day, someone asked me which of the three windows had been the best. I could not answer. In Monaco, the best answer is not having to choose.
