They say there are 365 islands. No one counts, and no one needs to. In Angra dos Reis, the Serra do Mar falls straight into the water, the Atlantic rainforest ends at the sand, and distances are measured by boat. The best of the bay is not on any map: it is in the unnamed cove, the house reached only by sea, the island where cars are not allowed.

These are inclusive-rate hotels: the nightly rate covers guided excursions, meals and the spa. That changes the arithmetic, because what you would normally buy separately is already inside, and it changes the rhythm, because no half day is lost arranging a tour. Two operations do this well in the southern cone, Tierra and Explora, and we work with both.
Forty suites on the shore of Lago Sarmiento, facing the Paine massif, built in lenga wood that curves along the ground. The excursions into Torres del Paine leave from the door, with a guide, and come back to the Uma Spa. This is the address that solves Patagonia without turning the trip into an expedition.

Torres del Paine, ChileIn the Chacabuco valley, inside the park built out of the old estáncia. This is Patagonia with no queue: guanaco, open pampa and trails almost nobody walks.
Valle Chacabuco, ChileAt the foot of Fitz Roy, on the bank of the Rio de las Vueltas. You walk out of the door onto the trails, which is where Argentine Patagonia turns vertical.
El Chaltén, ArgentinaOn the steppe, near Lago Argentino. It is the base for the Perito Moreno and the estáncias, with boat crossings and ice walks leaving from the house.
El Calafate, ArgentinaIn San Pedro, with its own stables and observatory. The desert splits into morning and afternoon departures, and the house builds the combination around your acclimatisation.
San Pedro de Atacama, ChileOn a hill well away from Hanga Roa, turned toward the ocean. Moai, craters and coves are inside the rate, with an island guide.
Rapa Nui, ChileOn an old farm in Urquillos, between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Ruins, salt pans and altitude walks are inside the rate, and you acclimatise in the valley itself.
Sacred Valley, PeruWe book all of them. Room category, arrival time and what the rate includes are settled beforehand, in writing. The overland crossing between the Atacama and the Salar de Uyuni, which Explora runs over several days, is arranged separately.
