Trancoso, Punta del Este and St. Barths. All three are excellent. The difference is the kind of midnight you want, and how much time is left.
Trancoso pede um ano de antecedência e entrega a virada mais brasileira: casa com equipe, pé na areia e festas fechadas. Punta del Este é o mais social e o mais fácil de organizar tarde, com estrutura para grupos grandes. St. Barths é o mais internacional e o mais caro, com o porto cheio e a ilha operando no limite.
In all three, what separates a good New Year from an ordinary night is the same: the right house, a table booked on the two nights that matter, and being on the list for the parties that are never announced.

Trancoso
The Quadrado at eight in the evening, when the light drops and the painted houses come on.
Trancoso is the most Brazilian of the three, and the hardest to arrange well. The good houses on the Quadrado and along the shore close a year ahead, many for the whole season rather than by the week.
The parties that matter are few and closed. A table on the 31st in the Quadrado restaurants is booked six months ahead. Without one, midnight becomes an ordinary night in a crowded town.

The Quadrado is grass and uneven, and the streets are dirt. That changes what makes sense to wear and how you move between the village and the beach.

Punta del Este
A temporada argentina e brasileira no mesmo lugar, com estrutura europeia.
Punta is the most social of the three. José Ignacio holds the houses and the dinners; La Barra holds the night. Choosing between them changes the week entirely.
The place works well: good roads, serious restaurants and high-standard houses with staff. It is the easiest of the three to arrange at shorter notice, and the best at receiving large groups.

The season does not end on 10 January, whatever people say. Occupancy has held near 95% to the end of the month in recent years, and February costs about 20% less.

St. Barths é o réveillon mais internacional e o mais caro dos três. O porto enche de embarcações que vêm passar a virada, e a ilha opera no limite da capacidade por dez dias.
Anyone arriving without reservations will not eat at the good places or get into the parties. In exchange, it is the New Year with the greatest gathering of people from everywhere in one square kilometre.

Não existe ingresso central para a virada. À meia-noite, os fogos saem do Forte Oscar e os barcos soam as buzinas ao mesmo tempo. A posição no porto de Gustavia não se reserva: quem está atracado precisa voltar até as cinco da tarde para manter o lugar.

At year end, the difference between a rented house and a house that works is the team. It is the part almost nobody arranges in advance, and the one most visible on the night of the 31st.
