Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro
Atlântica
A whole floor above Avenida Atlântica, the beach just below, Sugarloaf at the end of the curve and, on New Year's Eve, the entire fireworks show framed by the terrace.
Reading the house
Copacabana makes more sense from above, and early in the morning.
The apartment takes up an entire floor of a beachfront building on Avenida Atlântica, near Posto 6. There are no neighbours across the hall and no shared corridor: the floor belongs to the house, and the house opens onto the beach. From the terrace, the whole bay fits in the frame, with Sugarloaf Mountain closing the horizon.
The living spaces run along the façade, with a sitting room, dining room and a pool table all turned towards the Atlantic. The glass doors fold back and the terrace becomes part of the room, with a lounge, an outdoor dining table and sun loungers. It is where the day begins, with the sun rising out of the sea, and where it ends, with the promenade lit up below.
There are four bedrooms, each with a double bed, and four full bathrooms plus a powder room. There is a hot tub, a fully equipped kitchen and a workspace with a sea view, for anyone who needs to answer a few emails between swims.
On New Year's Eve, the terrace explains the house. The Copacabana fireworks go off right in front of it, and the house can host party guests beyond those who sleep there, under rules and conditions specific to the night, confirmed in writing.

More houses, the same exacting eye.
In Joá, Yndu trades the beachfront for the hillside: five suites, an infinity pool and Pedra da Gávea alongside. Every house on the list is checked and described the same way.
